A major planning application which will extend Leven’s boundary has been approved by councillors.
Members of Fife’s central area planning committee gave their support to Campion Homes’ proposal for 100 new homes just off Cupar road.
Larger applications for the site behind Largo Road have twice been shelved, once following a public inquiry, as the land was not suitable for residential use.
But councillors were told the area was now zoned for housing in the local development plan and officers recommended the application be approved.
Ten of the new houses will be classed as affordable.
The development will be part of an ambition to provide 1,750 new homes across Levenmouth as the council bids to kick-start regeneration and investment.
The approval was granted despite a number of objections for local people concerned about the impact extra traffic from the scheme would have on the roads network.
Fears were also expressed about the loss of prime agricultural land and a lack of parking.
Committee members added a number of issues of their own, including the amount the developer should contribute towards public art on the site, the siting of grit bins and whether a playpark within the development should include equipment for children with disabilities.
Glenrothes councillor John Beare also raised concerns that the affordable housing would be together in one corner of the site rather than dispersed throughout it.
“I thought we had moved on from isolating affordable units in this way,” he said.
“They should be integrated throughout the scheme.”
Planning officer Martin Patrick said that while it may appear the affordable housing was on its own, he did not accept it would be isolated.
Mr Patrick said the houses proposed were a mixture of two, three, four and five-bedroom detached, semi-detached and terraced villas.
At present the B927 which borders the site is a 60mph zone but Mr Patrick said transport officers had recommended the 30mph limit from the town be extended beyond the proposed development.
The application was unanimously approved by the committee.
