Two firefighters who served the Fife community for three decades each have gone off duty for the last time.
Group managers Bert Stewart and Alex Smart retired from the Scottish Fire Service, after joining the then Fife Fire and Rescue Service in 1988 and 1986, respectively.
They were thanked for their service by Fife’s local senior officer Iain Vincent, who said: “The commitment from Bert and Alex over the past 30 years has been outstanding and their contribution has been an integral part of taking the service forward.
“Having worked closely with both over the years, their knowledge and professionalism has always been to the highest standard.
“Their exemplary service has no doubt had a vital impact on many people’s lives.”
Mr Vincent said the men commanded a great deal of respect from the staff they managed and their experience and knowledge would be a great loss to the service.
Bert joined the fire brigade after serving 14 years in the coal pits and worked in various stations across Fife and in various departments before becoming group manager of operations in Fife.
Alex also served in several stations and in several departments, finishing as group manager in prevention and protection.
