A Fife newsagent was assaulted with a hammer during a robbery at his town centre shop on Tuesday morning.
Police are hunting two men who escaped with around £500 in cash following the terrifying incident on Burntisland High Street.
The shop worker at Jason’s Newsagent was opening up for the morning at around 6.40am when he was attacked.
It is understood he was hit on the arm and did not require hospital treatment, although an ambulance attended.
Police said he sustained minor injuries.
Detective Sergeant Andrew Miller, of Fife CID, said: “Thankfully nobody has been seriously injured as a result of this reckless act but the member of staff has been left evidently shaken.
“Although this happened early in the morning, we are appealing to anyone who has any information surrounding the incident.”
Descriptions of the two suspects have been issued.
The first suspect is said to be a white man in his early 20s, around 6ft, with a slim build and no facial hair.
He was wearing a dark hooded top at the time of the incident.
The second man is also white male and in his early 20s.
He is around 5ft 6in, with a slightly stocky build.
He was wearing a red bandana covering his nose and mouth.
DI Miller added: “If you noticed anyone acting suspicious in the area, or anyone matching these descriptions, please get in contact with officers.”
