Tourists looking for a cheap break this spring should avoid St Andrews.
For the Fife town has come out top in a poll to find the most expensive spring destination in the UK in 2016. According to a survey conducted by Cheaprooms.co.uk, visitors to the university town can expect to dig deep to fund the most expensive accommodation prices anywhere in the country.
The poll determined the top 20 priciest destinations based on the cost of accommodation during the month of May.
It was carried out across all UK destinations which housed at least 15 hotels.
Visitors to St Andrews this month will have to pay an average of £119 per night for the most affordable double room.
But the north east Fife town is not alone in offering a warm, but undoubtedly costly, welcome to tourists this month.
For Pitlochry, on the picturesque river Tummel, sits at number seven in the list, with the average per night at £93. It is wedged between St Ives in Cornwall and Canterbury in Kent.
Along with Fort William, coming in at number four on an average of £104 per night, they all beat Scotland’s capital.
Rooms in Edinburgh average £83 this month, making it 12th on the most expensive list.
However, a similar poll last year found Edinburgh the most expensive summer destination with the most affordable double room at an average cost of £134.
Across the UK, after St Andrews, the next two most expensive destinations, Bath and Oxford, both have average rates of £112 per night.
And maybe it’s the influence of Richard III, or of the new Premier League champs, but prices in Leicester are high with it being 14th on the list.
The prices shown reflect the average daily rate for each location’s cheapest available double room, for a minimum three star,centrally-located hotel, for the period spanning May 1 to 31.
