A Kirkcaldy councillor fears that children could be seriously injured if they are not stopped from playing near a local community centre.
Local youngsters are climbing on to the roof of the Dunnikier Community Hut and jumping on to trampolines below, according to local representative Neil Crooks.
He is asking residents to report any such activity to the police as the roof is not able to support any weight due to its construction and condition.
Mr Crooks said: “I am horrified to learn that youngsters have been seen on the roof of the community hut jumping on to trampolines in the grounds and generally mucking around on the unstable roof.
“We had a temporary repair carried out which means we have a steel frame built around the building to hold the roof up, but it is not strong enough to support any additional weight and if youngsters go up there there is a likelihood it could collapse with dreadful consequences.
“The issues has been brought to the attention of education service as it is in the school grounds of the Capshard Primary School.”
Stating that police and community wardens had already been alerted to the activities of the youths, Mr Crooks continued: “It is the local community that are best placed to alert these agencies and hopefully the youngsters will be identified and their parents informed before something tragic unfolds.
“The huts need to be replaced and plans are under active consideration for some investments at the school for a new nursery and classrooms.
“Discussions will also take place about community activity inside the school in future as the community hut roof is now deemed beyond reasonable repair.
“My understanding is construction work will be undertaken during the summer holidays to meet the growing demands of future increase in school numbers and the provision of nursery access for all two-year-olds.
“In the meantime, we need to collectively ensure youngsters are aware of the poor state of the roof and to stay clear.”
Paul Vaughan, head of community and corporate development at Fife Council, said: “A visit is being arranged with colleagues from across the council and we will be looking at security issues.”
