Kirkcaldy’s waterfront will play host to the second ever UK Beach Highland Games on Saturday June 11, following on from the success of last year’s inaugural event.
Organisers will be hoping the sun shines on the Fife coast for the event, which was held for the first time last August and is the only event of its kind in the UK.
With obvious tide restrictions in mind, this year’s Beach Highland Games will begin at 10.45am and will finish around 2.30pm, with the festivities due to be kicked off with a parade and pipe band along the Storm Road from the memorial plaque opposite Volunteers Green.
And after Lord Provost Jim Leishman officially opens the Games at 11am, there will be a full programme of professional Highland dancing on the Storm Road, with athletic running events and traditional heavy events down on the beach.
In addition, there has been an overhaul to the heavies’ event this year and organisers are calling all novice strong men who fancy their turn at tossing the caber or throwing the shot to have a go.
A kilt will be provided to ensure the proper attire is worn, while a bottle of whisky will be up for grabs for the winner.
As per last year, children will be invited to participate in kids races on the beach and Marie Curie Cancer Care will be providing some light aerobics for anyone to join in with.
A spokesperson for Kirkcaldy4All, which has organised the Games, urged as many as people as possible to support the event next month, adding: “This is another local event that needs the support of the local residents and puts Kirkcaldy on the map as the UK’s first Beach Highland Games.”
