Birthday party disaster ends in court appearance for young man

A young man’s hopes of starting a new life in Scotland came to a violent end at his 22nd birthday party, Dunfermline Sheriff Court heard.

Joshua Steventon, 22, of Flookburgh, Cumbria, admitted that on Sunday at Tweed Street, Dunfermline, he behaved in a threatening or abusive manner by repeatedly shouting and swearing at Dee McEleny, his then partner, taking a mobile phone from her, refusing to return it and seizing her by the body.

He also assaulted Anthony Williams by repeatedly punching him on the head, causing him to fall to the ground, seized him by the body, pushed him on the body and seized him by the throat, all to his injury. He further admitted repeatedly shouting, swearing, punching and kicking a car and pulling a door handle from the vehicle.

Depute fiscal Azrah Yousaf said the couple had been in a relationship for 10 months but it was now at an end and the complainer has a new partner.

After being assaulted, Mr Williams left the house and went to his car with Ms McEleny and followed by Steventon.

“This was at 5am and the accused came outside in his boxer shorts, was kicking at the car and pulled the door handle, shouting and swearing all the time,” added the depute.

The victim received a swollen nose and bruising to his cheek during the assault.

Defence solicitor Jonathan Mathieson-Dear said his client had recently lost his driving job and moved from his home in Cumbria to live with his partner.

The solicitor said that his client had found “incriminating messages that suggested she was having a relationship” at the party.

“At one point she locked him out and this made him even more angry,” he added.

“He had taken beer, vodka and also the drug mephedrone, which he hadn’t used before.

“He had invested a lot in the relationship and it’s all gone wrong for him.”

Steventon will return to court on July 6 for sentencing.
