A poorly dog who sparked an online fundraising campaign has passed away.
Almost £1,000 was raised to pay Roxy’s veterinary bill after her plight captured the hearts of scores of people.
The Staffordshire bull terrier was well known in Kirkcaldy town centre, where he loyally sat with owner Paul Flockhart, 46, as he begged for money.
She was put to sleep on Tuesday evening after her condition worsened.
Seven-year-old Roxy had been diagnosed with an enlarged spleen and had spots on her liver, which may have indicated cancer.
Grace Studders, who launched the appeal, said: “It is with great sadness that I have to say that Roxy had to be put to sleep.
“I took Paul and Roxy to Albavet in Kirkcaldy where it was established, as she had stopped eating, that the kindest thing would be to put her to sleep.”
Reporting her death on the Justgiving website, Grace, of Kirkcaldy, said Roxy slipped away peacefully and said Paul was upset at losing his little friend.
She added: “Also many thanx (sic) to everyone for your donations and kind words, Roxy will never be forgotten R.I.P. Roxy Xxx.”
Grace is to pay the veterinary bill with some of the money raised and donate the remainder to Second Chance Kennels, Thornton.
Refunds were also offered as Grace had originally stated erroneously that Paul, of Kirkcaldy, was homeless and as no treatment was pursued for Roxy.
Roxy was popular with shoppers, workers and residents in Kirkcaldy, many of whom would stop to give her a treat, a tin of food or some spare cash as she sat with Paul in Bell Wynd, between The Postings and the High Street.
