The skirl of bagpipes heralded the opening of the 163rd Thornton Highland Gathering.
Apart from one heavy shower midway through the afternoon conditions were bright and breezy for the event in the Fife village’s Memorial Park.
Last year’s games were cancelled due to bad weather.
Ever popular throwing events attracted a good field of seven competitors, with Sinclair Patience, from Tain, landing a treble with wins in both the 16lb and 22lb shot putt and the 28lb weight for distance.
A photo finish in the open 90 metres involving four athletes saw Kieran Kivlin, of Edinburgh declared the winner.
Following a couple of hiccups with the starter’s gun and a false start, the 200 metres eventually got away and there was no catching front marker Sam Bates, of Tullibody, who secured his first ever win in that distance.
The 800 metres was one of the races of the day, with Dean Whiteford, of Innerleithen, bursting clear of the 10-runner field to win in 2:05.73.
A thrilling finish in the youths’ 800 metres saw Hayley Brown, of Glenrothes, neck-in-neck over the last lap with Hannah Steel, of Lothian Running Club, but just pipped at the post.
Outwith the main arena there was a full programme of Highland dancing and solo piping.
The pipe band contest was cancelled due to a lack of entries but the two bands who were down to play still turned up and regularly performed for the crowd.
