A driver escaped from his lorry unhurt before the cab burst into a ball of flames in Kirkcaldy.
The dramatic blaze closed the Chapel Level dual carriageway at around 1pm.
Firefighters rushed to the scene to extinguish the raging fire, which resulted in a huge plume of thick, black smoke.
Police Scotland confirmed that the driver was unhurt.
The lorry, which belongs to Thomas Muir Group, of Kirkcaldy, was travelling east when the incident occurred near Fife Central Retail Park.
Both west and eastbound carriageways were closed briefly and one lane of the eastbound carriageway was blocked for more than two hours.
A spokesperson for the Scottish Fire Service said: “We received numerous calls to the Chapel Level area of Kirkcaldy and mobilised two crews from Kirkcaldy.
“On arrival they found an HGV well alight.”
The blaze was extinguished by 1.40pm and the vehicle was uplifted just after 3pm.
