Traffic in the north of Kirkcaldy came to a standstill for a time on Friday as a medical emergency necessitated the landing of a helicopter in Dunnikier Park.
Police were diverting motorists away from Dunnikier Way at around 12.30pm, but the traffic congestion caused eased once the patient was taken via ambulance to the nearby Victoria Hospital.
The helicopter involved was from the Children’s Air Ambulance service, transporting a baby boy from Barnsley who was born prematurely for specialist neonatal treatment in Fife.
The charity flies critically ill children across the UK to access the specialist care they need, although it receives no government funding.
A spokesman for the Children’s Air Ambulance confirmed that the journey from Yorkshire took around one-and-a-half hours, compared with the near five-and-a-half journey it would have taken by road, highlighting how vital the service is when every second counts.
