A teenager has been arrested in connection with an alleged serious assault on a young woman in St Andrews on Sunday.
The woman was taken to hospital for treatment.
A police dog was also injured in the incident and is receiving treatment from a vet.
A spokesman for Police Scotland said: “We received a report of the serious assault of a woman within a property on Winram Place in St Andrews around 11.10am on Sunday, October, 24.
“The 19-year-old woman has been taken to Ninewells Hospital for treatment.”
The spokesman added: “A 19-year-old man was later traced and arrested in connection with the incident.”
Police dog injured during arrest
Meantime police have revealed that a police dog was also injured in the incident.
The spokesman said: “A police dog was injured during the arrest and is receiving treatment at the vet for non-life-threatening injuries.
“As PAVA (a spray similar to pepper spray) was deployed and in line with normal procedure, a referral will be made to the Police Investigations and Review Commissioner.”
The drama began in the street around 10.30am on Sunday.
It is understood that a weapon was involved. Unconfirmed reports locally allege this was an axe.
The extent of the woman’s injuries have not been revealed at this stage.
Armed police raced to the scene on Sunday and immediately cordoned the area off, according to local eye witnesses.
Winram Place was sealed off at both ends during the incident and a “significant” police presence was reported.
Eye-witness, former police officer Bob Thomson said he witnessed the police activity while out walking.
Armed officers
Mr Thomson said: “I saw a lot of police officers in the street – quite a few of them were armed.
“There were also around eight or nine police vehicles and the street was cordoned off – I think in both directions.”
Mr Thomson added: “The police were concentrating on a block of two properties.
“There were police officers watching at the front of one of the houses while others appeared to be keeping watch at the back gate.”
Shouting
Mr Thomson said: “I heard a male voice shouting from one of the houses.”
He said he had also been told that an ambulance had been outside the properties earlier but had left by the time he was there.
He said: “I have no idea if they were needed or not.”
Mr Thomson said it was impossible to speculate what was going on but said it looked to be a major incident given the police presence in the street.
