An appeal for information has been launched following the discovery of a dead foal near Dunfermline.
The animal was discovered dumped in a ditch by a dog walker on Sunday afternoon, close to the Knockhill Racing Circuit.
A witness has reported seeing a man with a white van in the area, with the Scottish SPCA now keen to speak to the driver of the vehicle.
Inspector Nicola Liddell said: “The young foal was found on the edge of a forestry wooded area off the A823, lying in a ditch covered by freshly broken branches, as if someone had tried to hide it.
“The area is a popular dog walking spot just before you get to the racing circuit.
“A member of the public who was walking his dogs saw a white van reversing up the middle of the track towards the barrier.
“He thought this was strange as people normally park at the sides.
“The van was driven by an older man wearing a flat cap.
“When the caller arrived back to the area, his dogs located the foal in the ditch just behind the forestry barrier.
“We are appealing to anyone with information about this incident to contact us as soon as possible.”
“There are potential concerns for the mother of the foal and we are keen to ensure she is in good health.”
Anyone with information is being asked to contact the Scottish SPCA animal helpline on 03000 999 999.
