However, the force is now treating the incident as attempted murder, and have arrested – and subsequently released – a man in connection with the case.
The property where the attack allegedly happened remains cordoned off.
In an update to The Courier on Thursday, a Police Scotland spokeswoman said: “Officers were called to a report of a man found with serious injuries on High Street, Leslie around 10.50am on Wednesday.
“Emergency services attended and a 28-year-old man was taken to Victoria Hospital, Kirkcaldy for treatment.
“A 23-year-old man was arrested and released pending further inquiries.
“Officers are treating this incident as attempted murder and are following positive lines of inquiry.”
