An ambulance responding to an emergency call was involved in a crash with a car in Dunfermline town centre.
The female driver of the red Toyota Yaris was trapped in her vehicle and had to be cut free by firefighters after the lunchtime smash on Wednesday.
She was treated by paramedics at the scene before being taken to hospital with what were described as minor injuries.
The collision happened at the junction of Carnegie Drive and Pilmuir Street, close to the town’s sports centre, at around 12.40pm.
It is understood the ambulance was operating under blue light conditions at the time but there were no patients on board.
A spokeswoman for the Scottish Ambulance Service confirmed the vehicle had been en route to an emergency when the accident happened.
She said a second ambulance was immediately sent to collect the waiting patient.
“We dispatched another vehicle right away to pick up the patient we were going to,” she said.
“No member of staff within the ambulance was hurt but one other person suffered minor injuries.”
Police officers were at the scene diverting traffic on what is one of Dunfermline’s busiest arterial routes while firefighters got to work with their cutting equipment.
Two children’s car seats could be seen on the road but there were no youngsters in the car at the time of the crash.
A spokesperson for the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service said: “There was one female trapped but she was not critical.
“She was extracted from the vehicle and left in the hands of paramedics before being transported to hospital.
“Crews remained to make the scene safe.”
