A group of volunteers hope to make a splash by creating a community-run sea-filled swimming pool.
The old tidal sea pool in Pittenweem could be restored to its former glory if a community funding bid is successful.
The once-popular pool on the village’s West Braes has lain derelict for decades and locals hope their ambitious plan will boost tourism and prompt a resurgence of outdoor bathing across the country.
Members of the West Braes Project have applied for £100,000 of lottery funding and are also raising money locally.
Fife Council provided £4,000 towards the first stage of the project, which included rejuvenating the crazy golf course.
The move follows extensive consultation with people living and working in Pittenweem.
There are also plans to upgrade a footpath and create a picnic area and toilets at the popular area, which overlooks the west shore and harbour.
The pool would be the focal point, however, and efforts are ongoing to ensure it is restored.
Local man David Thomson said: “I used to swim in it when I was a boy and a lot of people learned to swim there.
“The council used to run it but it has fallen into disrepair.
“The community is trying to revamp it to as much of its former glory as we possibly can.”
In its hey day in the 1980s, the pool included a slide and a diving platform.
The group hopes to provide changing rooms and possibly a lifeguard during the summer if funding permits.
“Some of the stories people are telling us about the pool are amazing,” said David.
“The support we’ve had from local people and businesses for this has been fantastic.”
The outdoor pool is the second phase of the West Braes Project.
The derelict crazy golf course was restored and reopened through community funding in May.
Fundraising continued this weekend with an auction in Pittenweem’s scout hall.
The event at 7.30pm on Saturday will feature auctioneer David Joy from St Andrews.
Organisers hope to raise £1,000 on the night and say anyone is welcome to go along.
