Police in Fife are investigating the unexplained death of a woman in Anstruther.
Emergency services were called to a flat in the town’s High Street East at around 8.30am on Monday and the area was quickly cordoned off.
It is understood that police and first responders attended, but the 43-year-old woman was pronounced dead at the scene.
The woman’s body was removed from the property at around lunchtime and investigations into what happened are under way.
A spokesperson for Police Scotland said: “Police in Anstruther were called to an address in the High Street at around 8:30am on Monday, November 14, after the body of a 43-year-old woman was found within.
“The death is currently being treated as unexplained pending the result of a post mortem examination however there are not thought to be any suspicious circumstances.”
One witness, who did not wish to be named, said: “Whatever has happened, it’s obviously not nice.
“There was police and paramedics everywhere all morning and then they took what was obviously a body out of the property about 1.30pm, something like that.
“People are saying it looks like a drugs overdose but it’s still a shock in a place like this.”
The identity of the woman will not be released until next of kin have been informed, although it is understood she is from the East Neuk area.
