Levenmouth residents will be going to the polls in a month’s time to elect a new councillor.
The SNP, Labour, Conservatives, Liberal Democrats and the Greens have announced their candidates to contest the Leven, Largo and Kennoway ward following the resignation of SNP councillor Ally Hunter, who is emigrating to Australia.
Mr Hunter had held the seat for almost 10 years and the by-election on December 15 is likely to be a two-horse race between the SNP and Labour.
SNP candidate Alistair Suttie hopes to retain the seat for the party after four years as chairman of Leven Community Council.
Born and raised in Windygates, Mr Suttie is also a volunteer with Leven Environment Group and a supporter of the campaign to restore a Levenmouth rail link.
He said: “As your local councillor I will oppose Fife Council cuts and fight to protect services in our area.”
He pledged to be a strong voice and said he would stand up and be heard.
Labour’s candidate is teacher Colin Davidson, a seasoned campaigner for public services, a member of the children’s panel and a founding member of Levenmouth’s street pastors.
He said: “As a teacher for nearly 25 years in some of our most impoverished communities I’ve witnessed first hand the impact of the savage cuts in the education budgets have had.
“We need credible, honest, hard-working local candidates with a passion for the community they were born and live in.”
The Conservative candidate is Graham Ritchie, a major figure in the development of Methil Heritage Centre and a former community education worker.
And Iain Morrice for the Scottish Green Party said one of his priorities would be to improve public transport. including campaigning for the reinstatement of the rail link.
Steve Wood will represent the Liberal Democrats in the poll.
Fife Council has urged everyone in the ward to ensure they are registered to vote by Monday November 28.
Anyone wishing a postal or a proxy vote has until 5pm on Tuesday November 29 to apply.
Electoral registration officer Linda Bissett said: “It’s important that local residents make sure they can take part.”
