A horse has been put down after an accident with a car in Fife on Friday morning.
The incident happened on the A911 Windygates to Milton of Balgonie road at around 5.50am.
An investigation has been launched by police to determine how the horse ended up on the carriageway.
Officers have confirmed the 47-year-old female driver of the car was uninjured.
The incident brought chaos to commuters, with the road closed for several hours as vets tended to the injured animal before ultimately taking the decision to put it to sleep.
The road, which links Levenmouth and Glenrothes, was reopened at around 9.30am.
A Police Scotland spokeswoman said: “Police in Fife are investigating following a road traffic collision on the A911 between Windygates and Milton of Balgonie.
“The incident happened around 5.50am when a motor vehicle collided with a horse.
“The horse unfortunately sustained very serious injuries and was required to be put to sleep at the scene by a vet. The road has now reopened and enquiries are currently ongoing.”
