Police in Fife have launched a festive safety drive urging revellers to have a crime free Christmas.
Chief Superintendent Colin Gall said the party season posed additional risks, from ATM fraud to drink driving.
“Overall the message is stay safe and have a good Christmas and New Year,” he said.
“In relation to road safety, the main message is don’t drink and drive.
“And please be conscious of the morning after as well. Don’t be encouraged by your friends to have that one more drink if you’re driving the next day. At this particular time of year, during the festive season, the risk is always higher.”
Police Scotland’s Fife division launched its Christmas safety campaign at the Scottish Deer Centre in Cupar.
Standing next to the centre’s resident reindeer, Mr Gall said the public should be vigilant about opportunist thieves as well as more organised fraudsters.
“Make sure security at home is good, and that you’re not leaving presents out in the open. If you are going away for the Christmas period, then please ensure that your house is locked secure. Take the opportunity to leave a light on, perhaps using timers.”
Constable Mark Anderson offered some extra advice for ATM users, to prevent them from falling victim to card fraud.
Using a display ATM machine and skimming device seized from criminals in Rosyth, he demonstrated how to look out for suspicious contraptions which could be reading card details.
Mr Gall added: “The shops are really busy at this time of year and the ATM that we have on display here today shows you just how concealed skimmer devices can be.
“Also take small amounts of money from the ATM at one time.”
The Chief Superintendent urged party revellers to watch their alcohol consumption.
“Make sure that you’re keeping yourself safe, your phone is fully charged. Arrange your lift home because taxis will be busy,” he said.
“Ensure people know where you are. If you’re out with friends, be sure to stay with friends because alcohol consumption increases your vulnerability to be a victim.”
