‘Miracle nobody was killed’ as car crashes into Cowdenbeath house

A car has smashed into a house in Cowdenbeath, causing significant damage.

Emergency services were called to Anderson Drive at 9.15pm on Sunday after the car hit the front of a house in the Fife town.

A 71-year-old man was checked by ambulance crews but it is understood his injuries are not serious.

The car remains at the house.

One neighbour, who asked not to be named, said she heard an “almighty bang” shortly after 9pm.

She said: “I was jut settling down to watch television when I heard this almighty bang which made me jump.

“I looked out and within seconds there were a number of people in the street.”‘

‘Some sort of explosion’

She added: “At first I couldn’t tell what was going on and thought it may have been some sort of explosion.

“The I went outside and could see that a car had gone right through the front of the house.”

Another resident said he had been returning to his home in Anderson Drive when he saw the commotion.

Car ’embedded’ in house

He said “The road had been taped off for safety but I could clearly see the car embedded into the front of the house.

“To see the car having crashed right through the wall and into the house was pretty shocking.

“There were firefighters all around the car while an ambulance crew were attending to a man a short distance away.

“It’s a miracle nobody was killed in the crash.”

Structural damage specialists

Three fire engines, a heavy lifting unit and a structural damage team were all sent to the scene and worked until 11.30pm to make the building safe but the car remains in place.

A Scottish Fire & Rescue Service spokesman said: “We received an alert at 9.14pm on Sunday to a vehicle having struck a building in Anderson Drive, Cowdenbeath.

“Three appliances, two from Lochgelly and one from Dunfermline stations were mobilised.”

He added: “A heavy lifting unit was also despatched from Sighthill station in Edinburgh.

“In addition an urban search and rescue team specialising in structural damage was also sent to the scene from Newcraighall in Edinburgh.

‘No serious injuries’

“Paramedics attended to the driver but it is thought there was no serious injuries.

“Crews worked to make the area safe and the stop sign was confirmed at 10.13pm.

“Officers remained at the location until 11.30pm.”

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Officers attended a one vehicle crash on Anderson Drive, Cowdenbeath at around 9.15pm on Sunday.

“Emergency services attended and the driver of the car, a 71-year-old man, was checked by the ambulance service.”
