A Kirkcaldy landmark could be demolished after efforts to sell it for £1 failed to attract a buyer.
The Victoria Power Station has been marketed for the past six months after a previous plan to develop the site into a nursing home fell through last year.
Though not in his area, the chair of Kirkcaldy West Community Council, David Henderson, said the removal of the building could help to regenerate the area.
“I can’t say I would be sad to see it go,” he said.
“That’s my personal opinion, but clearing up the site could be a small start towards fulfilling the charrette we had a couple of years ago.”
The B-listed building was designed for Kirkcaldy Corporation Tramways by architect William Williamson.
Opened in 1903, the facade on to Victoria Road was detailed in an Edwardian baroque style, commonplace on high-profile industrial buildings at that time.
Such examples are now rare in Kirkcaldy and its preservation had initially been deemed paramount by planners, despite the poor state of the rest of the structure.
Fife councillors backed demolition plans for the building last year, with developers keen to replace it with a nursing home.
However, those plans were pulled and the site was marketed on the proviso that the building’s frontage was incorporated into any new development.
A supporting statement from developers, United Investments Co Ltd, claims that repair of the power station is not economically viable and that efforts to find a developer willing to take on the building have been exhausted.
“The retention of the Victoria Power Station has blighted the potential regeneration of the overall site,” it said.
“No restoring or commercial purchaser has expressed any interest in acquiring the site for the nominal sum of £1, even although the site has been actively marketed for six months.
“It is evident that the repair and retention of even the front facade of the Victoria Power Station is not economically viable.
“The loss of the Victoria Power Station is regrettable, but will be mitigated by the substantial benefits that will be derived from the regeneration opportunities for the site and the wider local area.”
