A truck-load of rubbish has been emptied outside Kirkcaldy police station after a bin lorry caught fire.
Fire crews rushed to St Brycedale Road just after 9am on Wednesday to reports of a bin lorry ablaze.
Two appliances worked to extinguish the fire and left the scene shortly afterwards.
A large pile of rubbish now lies on the road outside Kirkcaldy Police Station while Fife Council attempts to recover the mess.
Locals in the area have reported smelling a bad odour in the area as large mounds of bin bags and other waste covers part of the pavement.
One passer-by said: “The mess is at the side of road outside the police station and it stinks.
“Traffic is okay in the area, cars seem to be getting through while the council tidy up the mess and clear all the rubbish.
“I hope it gets cleared up sooner rather than later.”
A spokesperson for the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service said: “We were called to St Brycedale Road at 9.06am to a bin lorry on fire.
“Two appliances were in attendance and we left the scene at 9.22am.”
Bin men praised for quick action
Team manager at Fife Council Shaun Kenyon confirmed that there was a “small fire” in a bin lorry which was servicing bins on St Brycedale Ave.
He praised the swift actions of the crew who discharged the lorry contents quickly and put out the fire.
“We’re now cleaning up the area and thanks to the crew there is very little damage to the vehicle and everyone is ok,” Shaun said.
“The lorry will be repaired and will be back on the road as soon as possible.”
