Drink-driving went up by 42% in Kirkcaldy and Glenrothes over the Christmas and New Year period.
Police said they caught 17 people driving over the limit during their festive safety campaign this year, compared to 12 last year.
Inspector Graeme Neill described the increase as significant.
“Whether it’s affected by the lower drink drive limit, I don’t know,” he said.
“It shows the campaign worked. We’re getting the numbers.”
This is the first year officers in Glenrothes and Kirkcaldy have pooled their resources to run a joint campaign rather than individual ones in each town.
The number caught has been described as disappointing by Kirkcaldy and Glenrothes MSPs.
But David Torrance and Jenny Gilruth both said the figure highlighted the success of the police campaign.
Mr Torrance said: “I would hope this sends a clear message that drink-driving offences will not be tolerated in Fife and I would commend the police for their determined efforts.”
Ms Gilruth said it was reassuring to know police officers were working hard to keep everyone safe over the festive period.
She added: “There is clearly work yet to be done however, in terms of further educating people on the dangers of drink-driving.”
Across Scotland, one in 35 drivers stopped was over the alcohol limit.
Of the 459 drivers caught drink-driving just 19 were found to be between the old and new limit.
