Opposing football fans have clashed in Dunfermline town centre with shoppers forced to dive for cover as missiles and flares were thrown.
Eyewitnesses say around 80-100 people were involved in running battles along High Street in the town centre.
The clashes started shortly after 11am between rival Dunfermline and visiting Falkirk fans ahead of Saturday’s fixture at East End Park.
Missiles thrown
One shopkeeper, who asked not to be named for fear of reprisal, said it was the worst violence she had ever witnessed.
She added: “It was terrifying to watch and very intimidating to see so many people intent on violence.
“It started with one group of men who were mainly dressed in black clothing with many also donning balaclavas and face coverings throwing missiles and letting off smoke bombs and flares.
“A short time later there was a clash between a separate set group of men and older boys.
“Chairs and tables from the nearby cafe were thrown as well as other items.
Shopkeepers lock their doors
“There was a running battle which just kept on going.
“It was frightening.”
Some shoppers were forced to take cover in shops and doorways.
“I took about five or six shoppers into my store and locked the door for our safety.
“People were really shocked by what they were witnessing.
“It was a real mob mentality and very aggressive.
“The most shocking thing was that it was all very organised and orchestrated.”
Footage of the incident posted on social media shows opposing groups clashing the lower end of the town’s High Street and Kirkgate close to the city chambers.
