The family of a Fife gran have paid tribute to “their fighter and hero” after her sudden death at the age of 64.

Mhari Millar, who lived with relatives in Thornton, died from a bleed on the brain in the early hours of Saturday morning.

The mother of two and grandmother of five – rushed to Kirkcaldy’s Victoria Hospital on Friday night – had previously survived cancer and four years ago suffered an aneurysm.

Carolann Curran, a close friend of Mhari’s daughter Niki Caira, said her last wish was that her organs were donated.

She added: “Mhari was a very loving mother and grandmother.

“She lived in Dormitory Flat which adjoins Dormitory House, so ‘nanny’ was there every day of the kids’ lives.

“Obviously the kids are wondering where she is and they’re missing her terribly.

“She was the figurehead of the family, the glue that kept them together, the matriarch.

“She was a very unassuming and quiet, but naturally amiable, person.”

‘My inspiration, my role model and now my angel’

Niki – in a social media tribute the family shared with The Courier – wrote: “My world has fallen apart today – my mum was my everything.”

Mhari’s 18-year-old granddaughter Mya described her as “one in a million”.

In a Facebook post, she said: “My beautiful gran surviving cancer and then an aneurysm nearly four years ago sadly had another bleed on the brain last night.

“I can’t thank the NHS staff at Kirkcaldy Hospital [Victoria Hospital] enough and the ambulance crew that took her down to the hospital.

“But unfortunately the bleed was just to big for her to fight this time.

“She truly was the glue of the family, a fighter and our hero, to have had 64 amazing years on this earth and putting up such a strong fight this was just one she couldn’t get the better of.

“I truly don’t think life will ever be the same.

“My inspiration, my role model and now, my angel robbed out of a life, but I am so lucky to have had her as my grandmother.

“I will remind the two babies each and every day how amazing you were and you will never, ever be forgotten.

“I’ll forever treasure every moment we had together.

“She really was one in a million. You’ll always be the brightest star in the sky. If I could have stayed by your side forever I would have.

“I love you and will for all eternity.”
