People gathered to remember the brave Fifers who joined the British Battalion of the International Brigade.
On the 80th anniversary a commemoration took place in Kirkcaldy on Saturday to those who were driven by a need to go and fight in the Spanish Civil War.
Among the volunteers of the International Brigade were more than 40 men from Fife.
Their names are inscribed on a memorial stone in Kirkcaldy.
Many returned to the kingdom, but many died in Spain.
The British Battalion first saw action in Jarama Valley in February 1937 with volunteers from across Fife involved in the battle.
It was to mark the 80th anniversary of that, that the Fife Trades Union Council organised Saturday’s event.
Ian Waddell, chairman of Fife Trades Union Council, said the Fifers who went to fight fascism had a “clear political perspective”.
Events have been held in Fife since 1980.
In 1987 there were still some Fife volunteers alive who were able to attend.
By 2006 the last surviving Scottish veteran attended the Fife event.
“By now even many of the veterans’ children are no longer with us,” he said.
“We feel it is important to keep on with these events.
“Like the volunteers, let us remember the past and prepare for struggles now and in the future.”
