A cordon outside Dunfermline Jobcentre has been lifted after the bomb squad was called to reports of a suspicious package.
The package was found inside a property on Foundry Street at noon on Friday.
It prompted the Jobcentre and surrounding properties to be evacuated, but The Courier understands staff have now returned to the building after the item was not found to be dangerous.
At the height of the incident residents were told to stay inside, with medics from the Scottish Ambulance Service special operations response team in attendance.
No injuries have been reported.
In an update, a spokeswoman for Police Scotland said: “Police received a report of a suspicious package at a premises on Foundry Street in Dunfermline around 12.15pm on Friday.
“EOD attended the package was found not to be suspicious.
“The cordon has been lifted.”

She added: “I know there are builders here just now but I haven’t seen them for a while.
“I’m not sure where they’ve been evacuated to.
“There are police here and the street has definitely been closed.”
A spokesman for the Department for Work and Pensions said: “We can confirm that emergency services were called to Dunfermline Jobcentre this afternoon.
“Our office remains closed and we hope to reopen as usual on Saturday morning.
“Our staff are contacting customers who have appointments booked to rearrange their meeting. Benefit payments are unaffected.”
