Police are looking to speak to witnesses who may have been in the area in the hours leading up to a fire at a Poundstretcher in Leven.
Sixteen fire crews battled the blaze on Leven’s High Street which started just after 2am on Tuesday.
The discount store was destroyed in the blaze, leading to fears the entire building may have to be teared down as a result.
A number of neighbouring shops also suffered significant damage, including Stuart’s the Butcher and a solicitor’s office next door
Officers say they are now appealing to potential witnesses to determine the cause of the fire.
Detective Inspector Karen Muirhead said: “Poundstretchers and other local businesses have been significantly affected by this fire and our enquiries are ongoing to establish how the fire started.
Police keen to speak to people in the area between 11pm and 2am
“It would appear the alarm has been raised around 2am and the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service attended.
“We would be keen to speak with anyone who was in the area between 11pm and 2am as they may have witnessed something which may assist the enquiry.
“I am also appealing to anyone who has any information which may assist us to get in touch.”
Leven High Street and part of the Esplanade was closed for around 12 hours while the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service worked to extinguished the flames.
