Kirkcaldy is to have a proper Christmas lights switch-on for the first time in three years.
Stars of the town’s pantomime Ya Wee Sleeping Beauty II will lead a countdown before bathing the High Street in festive cheer.
The event on December 2 will also involve local school children, who have the chance to make their own lanterns over the next two weekends.
There was no official switch-on during the last two years as communities recovered from Covid.
And there were almost no Kirkcaldy Christmas lights at all last year due to public safety fears.
It was discovered they were not up to scratch when they were removed from their boxes, with issues with wiring and fixings.
However, organisers pulled it out the bag at the 11th hour by signing a contract with a specialist lighting company.
And they’re promising this year will be even better.
Candy canes, prizes and special offers
Dubbed Kirkcaldy’s Christmas Spot Lights, it is hoped a series of events over the next few weeks will celebrate the season while showing what local businesses have to offer.
Youngsters can visit The Mercat over the next two Saturdays to make their Christmas lanterns.
Free workshops take place on November 12 and 19 from 10am to 4pm.
The lanterns will be kept at The Mercat.
And children can collect them on December 2 for the switch-on of the lights at 4.30pm.
It will take place on the pedestrianised area of the High Street, near Kirk Wynd.
Choirs, brass bands and local radio station K107FM will provide entertainment.
And other festivities include a candy cane trail around the shops, with prizes such as a £100 Kirkcaldy Gift Card on offer.
Some shops will be open later with special offers for the weekend.
More lights than previous years
The whole event has been organised by a partnership involving Love Oor Lang Toun, K107FM and Fife Council.
And more plans will be unveiled over the next few weeks.
Labour councillor Ian Cameron, convener of Kirkcaldy area committee, said: “We are working with Blachere Lighting to deliver a high quality experience.
“And we’ve extended the cover of Kirkcaldy High Street from Charlotte Street, all the way down to the end of the Merchant’s Quarter.
“Covid has prevented us from being able to gather for our Christmas lights switch-on for the past couple of years.
“But now we can let local people celebrate the start of Christmas in Kirkcaldy.”
