Two women who stole cash from a Glenrothes pensioner may have committed similar offences in Dundee and Kirkcaldy, police say.

The 74-year-old victim originally thought she had dropped the money after withdrawing it from a cash machine at the Kingdom Shopping Centre in Glenrothes on Tuesday morning.

But officers say a review of CCTV footage revealed two women had actually taken the cash from the victim’s bag.

Those responsible are said to be “well organised”, with police identifying similar crimes the women may have been involved in elsewhere in Fife and in Dundee.

Potential links to Dundee and Kirkcaldy crimes

Inspector Kirk Donnelly said: “At this time, we are following positive lines of inquiry and have identified similar thefts in Kirkcaldy and Dundee, suggesting that these individuals have the means to travel to commit crime.

“My officers are working closely with local banks to ensure vigilance when larger cash withdrawals are made by elderly or vulnerable people.

“I would also urge the family members of those considered more vulnerable to assist their loved ones when withdrawing larger amounts of money, especially around the festive season.”

Anyone with any information is urged to contact police on 101, quoting reference number 1465 of November 22, or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
