A police probe was sparked after a Methil resident spotted blood dripping through their ceiling from an upstairs flat.
Officers were called to Den Walk at 2.40pm on Thursday afternoon following a report of concern for a person.
Firefighters were then summoned to force entry to the flat where they found a 39-year-old man with a serious head injury.
The man was taken to Kirkcaldy’s Victoria Hospital for treatment, before being transferred to the Western General in Edinburgh.
An investigation has been launched into the incident, but police do not suspect any foul play.
A Police Scotland spokesman added: “Enquiries into the full circumstances are ongoing, however at this time there are not believed to be any suspicious circumstances surrounding his injuries.”
