A firefighter from Fife injured in a blaze at the former Jenners shop in Edinburgh has been named as Barry Martin.
The 38-year-old remains in a critical condition at Edinburgh Royal Infirmary.
Emergency crews were called to the old department store at around 11.30am on Monday.
The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) dispatched 22 fire appliances – including several from the Kingdom – at the height of the inferno, with specialist resources called in.
Five firefighters were injured and required hospital treatment, including Barry Martin, who is in a critical condition.
Barry, from Rosyth, woks in Edinburgh.
The remaining four firefighters have been discharged.
One firefighter remains in critical condition
In an update on Tuesday, Ross Haggart, SFRS Interim Chief Officer, said: “This was undoubtedly a serious and complex fire.
“Our thoughts are very much with Barry and his family, and indeed with all of our colleagues who were injured in responding to this incident.”
Mr Haggart, from Carnoustie, added: “Barry is a firefighter based in Edinburgh and we ask that everyone please respect his family’s privacy at this time.
“We continue to provide all possible support to our colleagues and their families, as well as all staff involved.
“We are liaising with appropriate partners to ensure a full and thorough investigation is undertaken into this incident.”
The cause of the fire has yet to be confirmed.
Firefighters’ union offers support for members
A spokesperson for the Fire Brigades Union, which represents staff, said: “The thoughts of all of us are with Barry, his family, friends and colleagues and our priority at this time is the welfare of those affected by this incident.
“FBU officials in Scotland are already addressing this incident and together with FBU head office are making urgent arrangements on the immediate steps required.
