An American fast food outlet and a Costa Coffee drive-thru could be heading to Glenrothes if plans are approved by Fife Council.

An application has been submitted to the local authority for two drive-units to open at Bankhead Park, close to the existing Travelodge.

The proposed franchisees for the units are Popeyes, an American chain specialising in fried chicken, and a Costa Coffee.

Up to 40 new jobs could be created as a result of the development.

If approved, the Popeyes unit will be only the second shop the chain has in Scotland.

Under the plans, the new food outlets will be built just north of the existing Bankhead Services, on undeveloped land.

The application, submitted by Houghton Planning on behalf of the chains, details that both restaurants will be served by a new access off Bankhead Park.

The surrounding area is already home to a number of restaurants and and retail outlets, including a Marks and Spencer Simply Food, a Beijing Banquet buffet, and a newly completed McDonald’s drive-thru.

It’s also hoped the remaining plot of land next to the nearby Travelodge will be developed in the future.

What is Popeyes?

Popeyes was first established in New Orleans in the 1970s and now has more than 2,700 restaurants worldwide.

The chain opened its first UK shop in 2021 and has restaurants in London, Liverpool, Cardiff, and Plymouth.

Plans are also in place for a Popeyes to open at Barrhead Retail Park, just outside Glasgow, and if the Glenrothes proposals are approved, it will be the second in Scotland.

The menu at the chain predominately consists of friend chicken, including burgers and hot wings.
