All three Howe of Fife and Tay Coast councillors have been re-elected, with Donald Lothian for the Lib Dems, David McDiarmid for the SNP and Conservative Andy Heer all retaining their seats.
The result put the SNP ahead of Labour by one seat and what has been a tightly-fought contest in Fife.
Safety on the A92 has been one of the biggest issues in ward 16 and Mr McDiarmid said this had played a big part in his campaign.
But national and international issues also played a part in people’s voting behaviour, according to him and Mr Lothian.
Mr McDiarmid said: “We were expecting to have more seats under our belt by this stage but the world’s gone mad again so you never know what way it’s going to go.
“We’ve got Trump, Kim Jong Un and Boris Johnson and it seems to me people are no longer interested in voting for their hard-working councillors who work for their communities.”
Having said that, Mr McDiarmid added that constituents had appreciated his hard work over the last 10 years and had re-elected him based on his record.
Mr Lothian admitted there was a measure of relief following his re-election but said he was very pleased that people had given him their confidence.
“On the doorsteps I found there was a real mixture of local concerns and national issues,” he said.
