Firefighters were called to a blaze in the former Glenrothes police station on Sunday evening.
Three Scottish Fire and Rescue Service appliances rushed to the scene on Napier Road shortly after 6pm.
A SFRS spokesman said various seats of fire had been reported within the building.
Crews from Glenrothes and Methil used two hose reel jets and a main jet to bring the fire under control.
Thermal imaging cameras were also used in the operation and the outbreak was dealt with in less than an hour.
No-one was injured in the incident and whilst investigations into the cause are continuing, it is feared that vandals may have been responsible for the fire at the “eyesore” building, just months after fears were raised that it could be a target.
In February, Glenrothes area committee chair, Councillor Bill Brown said demolition of the former station could allow a car park to be created for staff at Fife House.
The local authority is hopeful of finalising the purchase of the site and developing it for what officials said would be a range of uses in line with the local development plan.
Police officers were relocated to the Police Scotland’s Detroit Road HQ in the south of the town to save money after maintenance costs for the Napier Road station were considered too high.
