She will be continuing as a councillor as well as an MP for the time being.
Fife’s newest MP, who wrestled back Gordon Brown’s old seat from the SNP, said she hadn’t spoken about any by-election for her Inverkeithing and Dalgety Bay ward yet.
And with the state of flux, with a Conservative party leadership in crisis, right in the middle of Brexit negotiations, a hung parliament and “with no one expecting this result” she added: “Let’s wait and see what happens at a national level.
However, she said it was vital to “get up and running” to represent her new Kirkcaldy and Cowdenbeath constituents as quickly as possible.
“There will be case work on a day to day basis, people will have issues and I need to be on the ball and start to take care of that – and the list is growing longer already.”
Mrs Laird, who said people were keen to engage with Labour on the doorstep this time around, is keen to see the area build from Labour’s manifesto pledge of a wider regional economic agenda.
“I am keen to make sure our area gets tapped into that.”
“For me that is something which builds on the work I started to do at the council.”
For a strong economy, she added, you have got to have people in work, have good quality jobs on offer, and the training required to fill positions.
“That is at the heart of rebuilding the constituency – people can feel there is a place for them and a job for them, something for their kids to go to.
“We have got to get stuck in about that.”
From her role within the council, she understood from businesses what was getting in the way of that.
