A schoolgirl remains in a critical condition in hospital after being knocked down by a car in Kennoway.
The 12-year-old is continuing to receive treatment for injuries to her head, chest and legs following the incident involving a silver Ford Mondeo in the town’s Sandy Brae on Thursday evening.
The youngster is now in the Royal Hospital for Sick Children in Edinburgh, having been transferred from Kirkcaldy’s Victoria Hospital in the aftermath of the incident.
The busy route was sealed off for five hours between the Bonnybank Inn and Jet petrol station after emergency services were alerted at around 7.15pm.
While the circumstances surrounding Thursday’s incident are not yet known, residents of Sandy Brae yesterday said that the road outside their homes was dealing with huge volumes of traffic on a daily basis.
Householder Ann Grieve said: “I don’t know what happened on Thursday. I just saw the blue lights and that’s what made me look out of the window.
“I’ve lived here for 17 years and it is busy with traffic, especially at rush hour time.”
Another woman added: “It’s such a busy road.
“I always worried that it was inevitable before someone got hurt here.
“I just hope the girl is OK.”
Frances Murray, who recently purchased a property just yards from the crash site, added: “When I’ve been reversing onto the road the cars have come flying down the road.
“It can be very dangerous.”
Police are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding Thursday’s incident, with Sergeant Alastair Purvis having issued an appeal to anybody who may have witnessed the collision to come forward.
Meanwhile, local councillor David Alexander said that he had been aware of long-term concerns about traffic on Sandy Brae, adding: “Every accident will be looked at.
“There is already a crossing just up from the garage.
“During the day there are not a lot of parked cars, but in the evening these can help to slow traffic down.”
