Peace in a quiet Glenrothes street was shattered on Sunday night when a people carrier burst into flames.
The inferno started just before 11.30pm in the Collydean area of the town.
One local resident in Dyce Way, who did not want to be identified, said she was just settling into bed when she heard a loud “pop” and the sound of glass breaking.
“I looked out the window and saw the flames. I just thought ‘oh my god’ as it was parked at the ball park and there were cars nearby as well.
“Thankfully they weren’t near enough to go on fire as well, but the fire did spread to some trees and they are scorched.”
She added the incident had been frightening.
“It was very scary — several explosions seemed to come from it.”
She said firefighters were very quickly on the scene to tackle the blaze.
A spokesman for the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service confirmed a crew had arrived on the scene at 11.25pm, having received a call from a member of the public at 11.20pm.
“The people carrier was well alight, and they used two breathing apparatus and a hose reel jet to extinguish it,” he added.
A Police Scotland spokeswoman said local officers were investigating the vehicle fire.
The incident happened around 11.20pm when a silver Fiat Doblo in Kemnay Drive – which lies next to Dyce Way – was found to be alight.
“Police, along with the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service, attended and the fire was quickly extinguished.
“Inquiries are currently ongoing to establish the circumstances,” she said.
