A football team dubbed The Unwinnables could be looking for a name change after finally securing victory in a charity match.
Three years after hanging up their boots after a dismal spell of results, the original players from Glenrothes Athletic took to the pitch on Saturday and managed to win on penalties.
The 2013 Legends, men who played in the club’s debut 2013/14 season, took on Glenrothes Athletic NewCo players from later, more successful years to raise funds for Cash For Kids.
Centre half David Alexander declared: “We are no longer The Unwinnables!
“The game finished 4-4 and we won 5-3 on penalties. We’re absolutely delighted.”
Despite the wet weather, around 30 players and a number of spectators turned up to support the cause at Overstenton Park in Glenrothes.
David reckons the match, along with a quiz night and auction later in the day, has raised more than £2,500 for the charity.
“The weather put off a few folk but it didn’t put off the players,” he said.
And the scent of victory could spur the squad on to organise further reunions in the future.
“There’s a few murmurs now that we’ve secured victory for the first time that we could do this more often,” said David.
“We could do it for charity in the short term but maybe next season we could get back together.”
Glenrothes Athletic’s inaugural season in the Fife Amateur Football Championship saw them concede their first goal in just 3.5 seconds, one of the quickest recorded strikes in football history.
They eventually lost their first match 10-0.
The heavy defeats continued for 14 months, by which time they were a completely new team after plummeting morale led to the departure of a huge number of players.
Ahead of Saturday’s match, David said: “The players that came in after that first season maybe thought it would be easy to improve on that team, so it would be good to prove them wrong. We have a good team spirit.”
