A Fife holiday park robbed by masked raiders recently upgraded its CCTV cameras and it is hoped detailed images can help catch those responsible.
Thieves broke into Pettycur Bay Holiday Park near Kinghorn between 2.45am and 3am on Wednesday and stole the safe.
Tommy Wallace, who is a director at Pettycur Bay, confirmed that nobody was hurt during the incident, although a night porter was on duty when a gang of four men broke into an office and got away with a four figure sum of money.
He instantly raised the alarm and police rushed to the scene.
Mr Wallace said: “Our main concern obviously is that no staff members were hurt. The damage which was done was a secondary concern.
“It was more an inconvenience than anything else. It never really affected customers too much.”
He said police estimated the gang were only at the scene for a matter of minutes and it was possible they had been deterred by the building’s alarm system.
“We just recently upgraded our CCTV cameras to high definition cameras, so we’ve got very good quality images,” he added.
Officers from Police Scotland’s Fife Division have launched an investigation into the incident.
It is believed the thieves travelled across to Fife from Edinburgh to target the holiday park. The empty safe was found dumped in the Millerhill area, on the outskirts of Edinburgh.
During the raid, the men made a failed attempt to break open an ATM which was in the foyer of the reception area.
The thieves are understood to have left the area in a dark-coloured vehicle, possibly a Mazda 3, bearing the registration plates SK56 UKX.
Subsequent inquires have established the same registration plates were stolen from another car at Auchingane in the Dreghorn area of Edinburgh some time after 4.30pm on Tuesday.
Police say the men involved in the break-in are then believed to have travelled south over the Forth Road Bridge before abandoning the safe near Monktonhall Colliery in Millerhill.
It is understood the safe was empty when it was found, although authorities have refused to divulge exactly what had been kept in it overnight.
Most of the residents at the caravan park were asleep when the thieves struck and were not aware of what happened until they saw police at the main building later on Wednesday morning.
