Firefighters tackled a blaze at two neighbouring houses in St Andrews.
Four appliances are attended to the Canongate area of the town.
It was confirmed there were no casualties.
Police: ‘Two neighbouring properties are on fire’
A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Around 4.15pm on Friday police were called to a report of two neighbouring buildings on fire in Canongate and Drumcarrow Road, St Andrews.
“Emergency services are in attendance and road closures are in place.”
A spokesperson for Scottish Fire and Rescue Service said: “We got a call at 3.57pm to attend a house fire in the Canongate area.
“We sent four appliance – from Cupar, Tayport, Methil and Blackness Road in Dundee.
“All four remain at the scene.”
She said firefighters used breathing apparatus, a height appliance, hose reel jets and a water tower to fight the fire.
She confirmed there are no casualties.
Roads around the area were sealed off to allow emergency services access.
Firefighters left at 8pm after making the area safe.
Local residents report seeing a major blaze
Local residents report seeing smoke spread over a large area.
One said: “There is smoke all over the top end of the town.”
Another said: “This was a huge blaze. There is a massive emergency response.
“I could see four fire appliances and there were firefighters everywhere.
“There was a height appliance directing water at the roof of one of the houses but from what I could see the roof of the property was completely destroyed.”
Another said: “I really hope everyone is ok. I am aware that two neighbouring houses are on fire.
“That is really scary. It’s been really windy so you have to wonder if that played a part in the fire spreading between the properties.
“I watched fire fighters focus their hoses on to the roof of one of the properties but from what I can see now the roof of that property is completely destroyed.
“It’s such a sad situation for the home owners.”
