Ultra-endurance athlete Mark Beaumont on track to reach the halfway point of his record breaking attempt to cycle the world in 80 days.
The 34-year-old has overcome injury and numerous problems since leaving Paris in July and is expected to hit the 9,000-mile mark of his 18,000-mile challenge on Tuesday.
The Dundee University rector has spent 16 hours a day on his bike and has travelled through more than 10 countries.
Mark cycled from Paris through Europe, and Asia and is currently in Australia.
The expedition almost ended on day nine when Mark fell from his bike after hitting a pothole, breaking a tooth and injuring an elbow.
He said: “Weather conditions and logistics are daily challenges, as well as coping with continually changing time zones.
“I’m having to draw on all of my experience as an endurance athlete, but through all of the trials, I am loving every minute of it.”
Mark is anticipated to be back in Paris by Thursday September 21.
He wants to raise £10 for every mile cycled — a total of £180,000 — for Orkidstudio, a humanitarian architectural charity for which he has worked for the last decade.
