Extra uniformed police have been deployed in Dunfermline following a serious sexual assault at the weekend.
Police said the additional patrols were aimed at providing reassurance and to allow members of the public to approach them with information or concerns.
The assault on the fringes of the town’s heritage quarter has been described as unusual for Dunfermline and is being treated as an isolated incident.
Detective Inspector Jim Leeson revealed officers had received a call from a member of the public at around 4am on Sunday, reporting a distressed woman in Netherton Broad Street near to The Brig fish and chip shop.
“Having carried out initial inquiries, we are investigating this as a serious sexual assault which has involved specialist officers searching areas at both this location and nearby Moodie Street,” he said.
“We currently have a team of detectives dedicated to this investigation who are progressing a number of lines in inquiry, including house to house enquiries in the area and reviewing CCTV footage.
“There are also additional uniformed officers on patrol to provide reassurance and for members of the public to speak to if they have any information or concerns.”
Mr Leeson said the victim was continuing to receive support from specially trained officers.
“I would like to reassure the community that we are treating this as an isolated incident,” he added.
No description has been released of the attacker but police are keen to hear from anyone who can help their inquiry.
“I would encourage anyone who was in the area of Moodie Street/Netherton Broad Street during the early hours of Sunday morning or who may be able to otherwise assist this investigation to approach an officer or call my team at Dunfermline CID on 101 quoting incident number 1074 of Sunday August 6,” Mr Leeson said.
“Alternatively, information can be passed anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.”
