West Fife scouts have ‘life-changing’ experience

More than 150 young people and adults from west Fife have shared a “life-changing” adventure this summer.

Scouts from Rosyth, Inverkeithing, Dalgety Bay, Cowdenbeath, Kelty and Dunfermline have been enjoying expeditions, hiking, climbing, mountain biking, camping, travelling, sharing stories and making memories with fellow scouts from across Europe.

Rosyth District Scouts have travelled to Switzerland, Norway, Denmark, Finland and Northern Ireland and to a UK-based international jamboree near Glasgow while scouts from Dunfermline District have hosted counterparts from Germany and Belgium.

Woodside explorer scout unit from Rosyth has just returned from the Spejdernes Lejr Jamboree in Denmark, spending a week living alongside 40,000 scouts from across the world.

From camping alongside each other, cooking meals together and taking part in activities, they learned about each other’s way of life

The local explorer scouts were hosted by a scout group from Stilling, near Skanderborg in Denmark.

These opportunities were said to be perfect for young people and adults to learn more about each other, where they live, their customs and cultures.

They all learned that they have much more in common that they do apart, according to Rosyth Scouts district commissioner Terry O’Neill.

The district commissioner added that scouting in west Fife was more popular than ever before with record numbers of young people and adult volunteers gaining invaluable skills for life.

“We have scout groups in almost every town, village and local community in west Fife but we also have waiting lists full of girls and boys eager to join in what scouting has to offer.

“This is only made possible by talented teams of local volunteers,” he added.

Now the organisation is currently looking to open a new scout group in the east of Dunfermline to serve the communities of Duloch, Crossgates and Hillend where demand is high.

If you can spare a bit of time to find out what it would be like to volunteer contact Mr O’Neill at rosythdc@yahoo.co.uk.
