An army bomb disposal unit has carried out a controlled explosion in Kirkcaldy.
The squad was called out at around 3pm on Wednesday after an antique fire extinguisher was discovered during renovation works at Forth House, next to the town’s railway station.
The item, thought to date from the Second World War, contained an explosive charge and those working on the former Fife Council offices phoned the police.
The building and car park were evacuated while the extinguisher was removed by highly-trained personnel.
It was then taken to Pathhead Sands near Ravenscraig Park where the controlled explosion took place.
A Police Scotland spokesman said they were called after the item was discovered and the bomb disposal team was notified.
“The military team took it away for disposal,” he said.
