Police in Fife will be carrying out additional checks on delivery vehicles in the run-up to Christmas as part of a new road policing operation.
Operation Incolumen will focus on giving advice to drivers of vans and lorries around safe driving practices, vehicle maintenance and the carriage of goods, as well as denying criminals the use of the road during the first half of the campaign.
Officers will also carry out vehicle checks at key locations for goods vehicles into December, taking action where appropriate.
Inspector Brenda Sinclair, of Fife’s Road Policing Unit, said: “We live in a world where we can have almost anything delivered to our door at the click of a button, so we want to make sure that at a time of increased demand as we prepare for the festive season, our roads are as safe as possible.
“We will be both stopping motorists and visiting distribution hubs and agencies in the first phase of the operation, to make sure drivers and their employers understand their responsibilities and are complying with the law.
“We will give advice and guidance primarily during this part of the campaign – but when shopping for the holidays gets into full swing in December, we will move onto enforcement with our check sites in operation.
Officials from the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency, HM Revenue and Customs and the Department for Work and Pensions will also be involved to cover various types of crime.
