A Fife man who went missing almost a quarter of a century ago may have been living rough on the streets of London.
The family of Peter McGuire have urged the High Valleyfield man to get in touch having not been seen since abandoning his car near the Forth Road Bridge in 1993.
Despite there being no trace of Mr McGuire since his disappearance, police say that evidence has emerged of a man using his personal information south of the border, prompting an investigation.
In a statement issued through Police Scotland, Mr McGuire’s family said: “Please Peter find it in yourself to get in touch.
“It would be a blessing to hear from you.
“We would love for you to be a part of our lives again in any way you choose, your terms, your pace, one step at a time.”
Mr McGuire was aged just 21 when he was last seen leaving Dunfermline’s Carnegie Swimming Pool on January 27 1993.
Having travelled from his home in High Valleyfield, he was reported missing and his car was soon recovered near to the Forth Road Bridge.
However, the investigation into his disappearance took an unexpected twist in November of last year, when it was discovered that a man using Peter’s name and date of birth had been living rough in the Hastings area of England.
As a result of further police work, it has been established that this man had quickly moved on and may have then been in the West London area.
While there can be no certainty that the man in England is Mr McGuire, police have issued a computer generated image of how he may look today.
Detective Inspector Kelly McEwan from Dunfermline CID said: “At this time, we do not know if the male down south is indeed the Peter McGuire who went missing from High Valleyfield almost 25 years ago, however he provided information which suggested knowledge of Peter’s circumstances.
“As such we are conducting a thorough investigation and liaising with our colleagues at the relevant police forces to try and identify and speak to this individual.
