Toilet attendants in Fife and Angus have bowled over the judges in the Loo of the Year Awards.
The Fife Coast and Countryside Trust’s toilet at Ruby Bay in Elie topped the Scottish beaches category, while the Shore Road loo near Aberdour Black Sands won in the parks and gardens section.
Completing a hat trick of awards for the in-house cleaning team, the best car park convenience title went to Craigmead.
Angus Council also cleaned up, with a national honour for its public toilet in Baltic Street and a leisure category award for the facilities at the Harbour Visitor Centre in Arbroath.
Fife Coast and Countryside Trust, which also scooped three platinum and seven gold grades, manages 13 public toilets across the kingdom.
Robbie Blyth, operations manager, said: “We are delighted to have the work of cleaning and litter picking teams recognised at these prestigious awards.
“It recognises the work and commitment of both our full-time and seasonal staff in maintaining these facilities to a high standard.
“This adds hugely to the visitor experience, for the many thousands of people who visit our sites annually.”
Angus Council had a 100% success rate on the Loo of the Year “Roll of Honour”, with all four of the toilets it entered in the contest scoring platinum awards.
A spokesman for the authority said: “The Roll of Honour and the recognition of providing a platinum standard of service is testament to the hard work and effort of our staff in providing and maintaining the best of facilities for Angus residents and visitors.
“The Loo of the Year Awards have been identifying the best in Britain for more than 30 years and we are pleased that the commitment of our staff has been recognised this year and frequently throughout the years.”
Loo of the Year Awards inspectors made unannounced visits to public toilets across the UK and assessed each against 101 judging criteria, including signage, décor, fixtures and fittings, and overall standards of cleanliness and management.
Every loo receives a grading ranging from bronze to platinum, with gold and platinum winners shortlisted for one of the several national awards covering England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland and the Irish Republic.
