A tragic accident which claimed the life of a grandfather would not have happened if his employer had safe systems of work in place, jurors were told. Workshop assistant Ian Bratchie, 50, died when he was run over by a lorry as he was working underneath it at Robert Purvis Plant Hire in Lochgelly. The accident happened in a parking area of the company’s premises at Cartmore Industrial Estate on September 3, 2015. The firm is accused of two breaches of health and safety at work legislation. Mr Bratchie, who was not a qualified mechanic, was supposed to be painting vehicles awaiting MOTs when he went under the lorry. Its driver told Dunfermline Sheriff Court he “felt a bump” and when he saw Mr Bratchie in his mirror he knew immediately he was dead. Jurors retired to consider their verdict on Thursday.
